First of all, what is Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)?

Virtual Desktops are virtualized versions of desktop computing environments all delivered from a central platform (VDI – Virtual Desktop Infrastructure). These virtual environments allow users to access their applications, files, and other data from any device with an internet or network connection. There are many different VDI platforms available and ICG specializes in Citrix, VMware Horizon, and Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktops for our manufacturing and distribution customers. These cloud desktop solutions offer more flexibility and security than traditional PCs.

VDI offers reduced hardware costs, centralized desktop management, flexibility to deliver Desktops as a Service (DaaS) on demand anywhere, increased accessibility, robust cybersecurity, and effortless scalability. 

The Challenge

ICG recently implemented a VDI platform with a client across their global manufacturing facilities. This client's journey showcases ICG's architecture and methodology prowess for delivering Virtual Workspaces. The client needed the factory floor to be flexible and allow for retooling and changes, but still ensure proper data collection and systems interfaces throughout. This need, coupled with the aging workstations throughout their facilities, required a VDI solution. The client had ERP and supporting applications that needed to be delivered and VDI was the perfect solution. The client had multiple plants across long distances as well as a mobile sales and support staff. VDI checked all the boxes for this customer.

The Solution

After a thorough assessment of their systems, processes, and needs, ICG determined that the Citrix platform was the right fit for the client as it addressed each of the client's requirements and concerns. Citrix's reputation for stability, security, and ease of deployment made it a clear choice. Additionally, its Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) offered unmatched remote connectivity, ensuring a robust and secure environment for the client's workforce.

Implementing Thin Clients

As part of the solution, ICG recommended the adoption of thin clients (simple purpose-built computers that access remote computing resources) to replace the aging workstations. Thin clients offered a cost-effective alternative, enhanced security, and simplified maintenance. Modern thin clients allow for all the peripherals to be connected and available to the VDI environment. ICG's experience with thin client architecture in hospitals, manufacturing, and banking guaranteed success with their end-user computing requirements. With Citrix powering the virtual desktops, employees could access their workstations securely from anywhere, boosting flexibility and productivity.
