Part 1: VDI Enables a Productive, Secure, Modern Workplace – Anywhere, Anytime!

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) moves desktop management from a local environment to a virtualized one. VDI is an environment where desktop Operating Systems (OS) and applications are hosted within a virtual machine (VM) running on a centralized server (or data center). Accessing images can be done by desktops, laptops, Thin Clients, mobile devices, and more. Single images are built and deployed to each end user (i.e., endpoint, i.e., workstation) and then centrally managed for different operations, updates, and troubleshooting.

Several VDI benefits stem from this computing environment that can profoundly improve the way you do business, so let's review a few right now.

It is widely known that PC desktops (often referred to as fat PCs) have inherent drawbacks with manageability, security, and resources in today's modern computing environments that the benefits of VDI can truly help to remedy. What's even more apparent these days is how VDI and its benefits are expanding to offer solutions for remote, at-home, or hybrid environments and support Cloud, DaaS, and SaaS services:

VDI can replace PCs almost everywhere within the organization – making deployment, management, and maintenance of replacement endpoints very easy. The endpoint becomes nothing more than a conduit. Remember, endpoint devices can be laptops, Thin (or Zero) Clients, tablets, mobile devices, etc.

Flexibility:

The flexibility of endpoint maintenance is one of several VDI benefits that positively affect your computing environment. All endpoints are managed centrally, making administration a breeze – meaning upgrades, application deployments, anti-malware, and SOC control can also be centrally managed, without user intervention, which helps end users' productivity. End users are not tied to any hardware with VDI, so moving to another endpoint is easy!

Accessibility:

Bring Your Own Device (BOYD) continues to rise post-pandemic, and almost everyone's workforce has to be mobile. The need or desire to work from anywhere, along with more employers not worrying if their staff is local (sitting right next to them) or across the world on another continent, VDI provides ALL users with remote, long-distance, and/or mobile desktop delivery. With VDI, everything is managed and protected in one central location/center/server. IT Admins can better maintain security – by protecting files from improper downloading, mass virus updates, etc.

User Experience:

We all know our users resist change, but once they have a VDI desktop environment, they quickly understand how fast and efficient their system is; no more aging PCs and poor connectivity hindering their jobs, and no more huge IT overhead managing their PCs!

Desktop virtualization looks and feels just like a traditional desktop experience. There is no difference and all the end user's peripherals (within reason) work! Amazingly, the end user can log in on any device and have their desktop and applications just like they left on the workstation they logged off earlier.

Improved Worker Productivity and IT Efficiency:

Utilizing VDI allows IT to focus on other initiatives as the enormous PC burden has been removed. The management and maintenance of their end users are centralized, changes and upgrades are done in group updates, and no one has to touch the endpoint hardware physically. From the end-user side of things, the same VDI benefit applies. If they have an endpoint issue, such as a malware issue, a sudden need for an upgrade, or say there was a system failure, they're not waiting until IT shows up to fix the issue. Instead, they can get back to work IMMEDIATELY!

Security & Back-Up:

As mentioned before, data is entirely centralized – more secure and protected – and data loss (with proper architecture) is virtually eliminated.

Cost Savings:

We've already mentioned some cost-saving benefits of VDI along the way, but just to review:

  1. Provide consistent employee experience across all devices
  2. Optimize productivity and streamline self-service support
  3. Improve business continuity and foster resilience
  4. Centralize and simplify technology management
  5. Ensure data security and regulatory compliance
  6. Application updates are simple
  7. Let IT focus on initiatives that drive revenue!
